She has no name. She has her knives. Her training. Her halo. The first and second give her the ability to defeat the opponents she is pitted against each month. The third frees her from pain and fear. From any kind of emotion at all. Everything is as it should be. Everything is as it should be, until… Fear… Pain… Anger… Happiness… Desire… Guilt… Love. When a newly named Kit escapes the Sanctuary after killing her best friend, the last thing she needs is another knife in her hand. Or Ryka, the damaged, beautiful blond boy, whom she refuses to let save her. The sights and sounds of Freetown are new, yet one thing is familiar the matches. The only difference? Where the blood in the Sanctuary landed only on the Colosseum floor, Kit will quickly learn that a river of red runs through Freetown’s very streets. Without her halo, the inhabitants of Kit’s new home consider her saved, but is that really the case? The reality of her old life is paralyzing. Would she be better off free of the guilt associated with all the blood on her hands, or is the love of one boy worth living through all the pain? The rumbling chant for fresh blood, the demand for sacrifice, echoes in Kit's ears. The Colosseum is behind her. The fighting pits await.

I am going to start this off by saying this book was amazing. This is one of my favorite genres, and this story is unlike anything else I have read. The ONLY reason I gave this a 4 star instead of 5 is because for me, the first third of the book was a little slow. Now, with that being said, I understand why it was. There is a LOT to the story. A lot that needs explaining and detail, and you can't just breeze by with minimal information. It is a necessary slowness to fully understand and appreciate the rest of the story. And, my God, what a story it turned out to be.
Kit is one of the most bada** heroines I have read to date, and has easily become one of my favorites. Halo has some of the most well built characters, intense and action packed story, and such originality that I can easily see this become one of the most loved dystopian series to date. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the hunger games.

Halo Blood Fire Volume 1 Frankie Rose 9781497323599 Books Reviews

I was completely absorbed by this book it's so fantastic.

KIt is freaking awesome. What she does struggle with isn't out of ignorance or naivety even but out complete lack of knowledge, experience and understanding that isn't even her fault. And because of how raw and new emotion and feeling are to her you feel everything right along with her! And she is seriously BA! She is really good and kicking butt!

Cai with the brief moments there are with Cai it was easy to love him from the get go, and want more of him and he just loves Kit, truly selflessly. And .... Without giving too much away I'm kind if wondering if there will be more from him?

Ryker is hot and dangerous and every bit of an experience Kit needs and he needs her just as much too. He has his faults but he is perfect for Kit and I want them to be together so bad.

Olivia beautiful and warm and aloof or... Too lost in her own thoughts... Kind of ends up really selfish in a really sad way that I can't spoil.

Callum mysterious, friendly and likeable... Not quite sure if he's going to be a love interest or part of a downfall or just a friend? I like him. And he seems to be a friend and not a foe.

Max deserves so much more from Olivia, a real caveman but likable, brief character

The Priestess is she bad? Is she good? Is she going to ruin Kits life? Is she working for someone? Obviously there's a major role here but very inconspicuous.

Jack or Grandfather... Seems to be the only reliable adult figure that Kit needs

James a bad bad man and suspicious and creepy. It bothers me a little that Kit can't really... Or rather hasn't really stood up to him! Your time will come James!

Penny Not too much devolved as a character so I hope to see more of her... She seems like a meek but strong character in her own way especially after everything she is still good to Kit which makes me like her.

Luca Kits little brother. He is a strong but innocent type and not much of him I. This boom, but he does matter a great deal and he's a fighter/ Falin just like Kit.

I want to know more about Kits birth mother and I want Kit to kick Lowrence's butt and I can't believe her step mom is such a beetch especially after certain things are revealed!
This was unique and face paced, I want more... now! I really hope the next boom delivers as well as the first!

The description of Halo caught me up, and I found myself one-clicking it; however, during the course of the book and at the end, I felt it didn't really describe what I was getting in to. I liked what I got into, but it left me with a totally different impression than what actually did ensue. That being said, the cover didn't draw me in at all. The original cover when the novel was Rashka, had drawn me in and that was why I originally went looking for it. I also found the glossary at the front of the book to be a little too much; as a reader I wanted to learn what those things were while reading the book. It made it feel more like a text book in the beginning than anything else, plus the terms weren't difficult to grasp onto within the book itself. Overall, the book was creative and had interesting twists by juxtaposing two different worlds right next to one another. They each house very similar and cruel games, of which they have different reasons for having. It still amounts to the same thing, though--an unneeded death. Throughout the story I grappled with the fact that I felt the very first thing that happened in the book was completely illogical. What Cai did made absolutely no sense, other than to move along the story. He knows there is a way out--he could have done the same thing, without doing what he did, during a training match. Once I got past the fact that his actions made no sense, especially for someone who was thoughtful about every single move, I enjoyed the story. It moved at a good pace, there were no grammatical issues that I could spot and there was minimal simile use. There where, I must admit, periods where I found myself skimming portions. I have previously read other books by Frankie Rose, so I had prepared myself for this already. I have to admit, I didn't skim as much as I normally do--and I am going to read the next book in the series. The last series I read by her, I picked up the first book and then didn't continue. This level of description became more arduous towards the end where the action heated up, and I found myself skimming at those parts to get past the description and get to the actual action. Besides this, I really did enjoy the novel! I've already one clicked the next one!
